Nothing says the Northwoods for me and many other folks like the haunting call of the loon. At times I get up in the middle of the night and wander down to the dock in the dark under the blazing stars. It's amazing how you can hear a far-off loon call, only to be answered by a closer loon, and then finally by the loons on our little lake. I often wonder if one could map out the calling if a single loon call actually travels across the Northwoods - like ripples on the water- one loon at a time.
